God knows your potential.

23 Jul

And there came an angel of the LORD, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites. And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour. ”    Judges 6:11,12

Gideon,is a man who was chosen by God,from a generation whose heart was far away from God. Gideon was an ordinary man but with an extra ordinary anointing and call from God.The word Gideon means, ‘great warrior’ or ‘one who cuts down’.He was called to deliver the people of Israel from the Midianites and also to destroy the alters of Baal. When God chose Gideon he was not in the best time of his life. For a better understanding I would like to introduce you to the background from which Gideon, who was threshing wheat by a winepress,to hide it from the Midianites was raised to the call of God, “a mighty man of valour”. .The people of Israel  were doing adultery which was evil in the sight of God and the Lord gave them into the hands of Midianites for seven years. The people of Israel forgot, how God delivered them from the bondage of Egyptians and all the mighty things they have seen and experienced on their way from Egypt;they forgot how God gave them the land they were dwelling in… God wanted His people to return to Him and so He gave them into the hands of Midianites, and it was not for few days or months but for seven years of severe oppression. The hands of Midianites dominated over Israel, after the crops were sown by the people of Israel, the people of Midian along with others came and destroyed all the increase of the earth, as well as the cattle and the riches. All their hard work went unpaid and the people lived in severe fear and they went away from their dwelling places and started to live in  caves and mountains.  The normal life of the children of Israel were disturbed, there was great impoverishment in the land and the people started to cry to the Lord because of Midianites. In the midst of all this brutality and persecution,we see Gideon threshing wheat in His fathers winepress. When many chose to leave their inheritance and fled to caves, Gideon was trying to save a small amount of grain, the labor of His hands, risking His life. While He was in the winepress the angel of the Lord appeared to Him and said “The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valor”.

The first thing I would like to share with you is the striking part from the above verse ‘Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress’.The winepress is usually found in the middle of a wine yard and the purpose is to extract wine from grapes. But here we see a winepress being used for a different purpose; Instead of producing the exotic wine Gideon is threshing wheat, and saving some ordinary grain. The joy of a wine yard is when wine is extracted in due season, here we see the joy being lost and Gideon is in great fear of Midianites. The reason why He threshes wheat in a wine yard is because the enemy won’t expect the wine yard being used for a different purpose.Dear child of God,today are you threshing wheat in the winepress like Gideon? Are you in great fear that Satan will take over your inheritance? Are you afraid of the enemy? Do you think God is not watching you when Satan stole your inheritance of peace and joy, that Christ gave you at the cross. Are you striving hard at your winepress and still all you can find is some wheat, just enough for your survival? God saw Gideon when nobody saw him. When Gideon was in the winepress he thought no one was watching Him. That is when the angel of God appeared before Gideon.God saw His helpless and timid situation. Jesus is watching you doing all that hard work and knows the circumstances that limits you from reaching the fullness that God has planned for your life;the fullness of joy and peace of mind,a blessed family life, total healing of your illness, financial or spiritual increase. When you are in a position of distress, Jesus is watching you closely and He is ready to open the gates of heaven and He wants to be involved with you to help you overcome your discouragement and torment.

The angel of God appeared to Gideon and said ,”The Lord is with you, mighty man of valor”.A person who is afraid of the midianites is called as a man of valor? The word valor means some one very bold and courageous to face the enemy.Heaven has a testimony about each one of us and that is based on our true potential. It is not about how we think about ourselves,it does not count how we react in any given situation, but it is about what we can do when God’s hand is upon us.In the midst of your present situation ,do you realize your potential? Many times we are so unaware of our abilities. In the midst of problem we tend to underestimate the value God added in our life. When we are depressed we often forget How precious we are in the eyes of God. We forget the immense power Holy Spirit has implanted within us to become more than conquerors. How far have you implied this power within us to be useful for God? But realize this today, even when we are not considering our capabilities, God sees us with respect to our true potential; He has implanted some talents in us which could only be brought out through the power of Holy Spirit. God likes to call us all,  Mighty men and women of valor. Today if he calls and commissions you to proclaim something that you consider as a mission beyond your capacity,do not hesitate to say “use me Lord,I am available for you, even when I am weak” because God knows our true potential,He will not embarrass you in front of your enemy, but will make you a conqueror.Gideon had many excuses when He was called by God ,but when the power of God came upon Him,He did mighty things and saved the people of Israel out of bondage.Dear child of God today God has seen you at the winepress and He likes to encourage you.Jesus likes to add value to your life by giving His anointing upon you.If you call upon His name He is there by your side to redeem you.

Bruised reed and smoldered wick.

23 May

“A bruised reed he will not break,
and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out,
till he has brought justice through to victory.
21 In his name the nations will put their hope.”
Mathew 12:20,21

The above verse from the book of Mathew is heaven’s revelation on the mission of Jesus,on earth. We might have read this portion many times but here, I would like to say few things that touched me,the fragile nature of a reed and the hopeless position of a smoldering wick. Reed is a very fragile plant whose stems are empty and they were used in making baskets ,also they were used in making music in olden days. The fragile nature  makes it easily bruised if not  tenderly  cared. And once if its broken its usually thrown out as they were cheap, easily available and they are of ordinary use, a reed does not have much to boast about.A bruised reed tells us a story of rejection, pain, emptiness and weakness ; nobody  cares enough to mend a  bruised reed. If we look a  smoldering wick, the unpleasant smell and darkness around it will drive everyone away from it.It cannot function in its normal manner, and if there is a smoldering wick,it is usually snuffed out soon, so that it won’t pollute anymore.

Our lord came in search of those bruised reeds and smoldering wicks, which the society could not accept. He came into the world for the rejected, the out cast and the hopeless to spend some quality time with them. When the world looks at them  with eyes of hatred ,His eyes are overwhelmed with compassion and faithfulness.Dear child of God, if you feel helpless in your situation, if you feel that nobody cares enough to understand you and mend you , here is good news,Jesus is faithful and His faithfulness on your life will repair and mend you.Today take heed under the Justice provided by Jesus, accept His loving will in your life.He have charge over your broken situation, He have control over your repeated futile attempts in life, Believe Him,and take the step of action by giving your life for Him. He is the only anchor of hope in our life, the only name we can trust.Yes, He is there for the meek in spirit, His loving kindness wraps all areas of your life. Don’t limit Gods control in your life, set Him above all precious things in your life  and enter into the sweet fellowship of Christ, where He is waiting for you to open your hearts door for Him.Today pray to Jesus ask Him for forgiveness of your past and ask Him to come into your life, He can give you hope. He can cast away your burdens and would like to trade it for love and peace. All your rejections He can turn around and give you acceptance by grace into His Kingdom.Let His love flood your soul.Today speak to your soul, My redeemer is here and my day of redemption is near,Jesus will turn around my situations. Our father have the time and patience to consider our case before Him,than ignoring us as a bruised reed or a smoldered wick ,as He finds us all precious and worthy in His sovereign gracious eyes.

May God bless you abundantly,

In Christ Jesus,

God’s predestined purpose for us.

12 Apr

EPHESIANS 2:10(NIV)

“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do”

Our God is the creator and the Master behind all the universe, and His same hands made you and me in his very own image. We all acknowledge to the fact that God created us,but the above verse leads us to another level, that makes us all very special. We are all the creation of God ,but our design is altered greatly when we are in Christ Jesus. When we accept Jesus, our old man who is bound to do sin is altered to the nature of Christ by the holy spirit. Now there is  a new life and new spirit that works within us.2 Corinthians 5:17“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”Now our dysfunctional old system and design is created anew and the purpose of this new design is to do good works in Christ. The good work that God expects from each of us would be different but definitely all of them would bring glory to God and bind us to the assurance of an eternal life. The last part of Ephesians 2:10 reminds us that  God has prepared a pre-destined plan of good works that we have to walk through and this particular design is unique in each one of us.I would like to explain this last part based on the understanding God gave me on this subject.

Sometimes to learn lessons from God, we really do have to go through small disappointments. This incident happened recently; we gave our house back in India, to do the interior work.We found a trusted interior designing firm and told them exactly what we wanted.I had such a passion towards the kitchen of this house,so I designed it custom, having in mind every concept I have known so far to have an efficient and purposeful kitchen. I spent my time and put my thoughts into it.I had so many specifications with the cabinetry, the drawers, the pantry area and every part in this kitchen was designed with one goal,a functional kitchen which suits my way of cooking, and also 100% based on my likes and dislikes . We were personally not present to look how the work was coming up. The work got over and we got reports from all who visited the house that the kitchen looked beautiful.Based on my design we were thrilled to see how the finished product would look like. One morning,I received the pictures of the finished product;to my disbelief I found the builder did not follow any of my instructions and he did a different design for my kitchen.I became very upset because the kitchen will not now function in the way I imagined and even though its beautiful, I know it would have been better if they followed the exact design I had in my mind. Few days after this incident, God bought this to my mind and asked me to think it on the basis of Gods purposeful artistic design for our life and how trueful are we to follow His instructions? When we are not following Him 100%,how much variation will be there to the Master plan He has custom designed for us. Jesus reminded me the pain He has when we  won’t follow His plan for our life, based on our time limits, our priorities in life and our convenience. When we come out of the pre ordained experiences ,God has some expectations about our quality as a  believer. He wants us more like Christ,He wants us to have an end result of good works that brings glory to His name.By going through certain tough situations God wants to bring out certain beautiful talents in us; sometimes it is to build our character to  a level God desires in us.For some others it could be to build a relationship with God like they have never experienced before. Some situations God wants us to learn humility and to honor others. Some situations would be to overcome certain weaknesses in our body or spirit. For some others it could be to produce some impartations to others; sometimes God brings situations to bring certain people closer to us and the result He intends would be  a joint ministry;at times it would be  to excel in some spiritual gifts. Yes,never limit God’s plan in our life. When God brings our attention on certain matters to be prayed or to do certain things promptly, never ignore it or delay it. Because there is a certain beautiful outcome that God expects from that. When we delay the things God asks us to do the beauty of His plan for us is ruined. This brings pain to the Father’s heart. We may feel happy that God used us to a certain level but the intended plan God had for us gets aborted. So dear child of God when God puts us in a position for his purpose be 100% true to His plan.

Philippians 2:13 (NIV)

“for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.”

May God bless you to become a purpose fulfilling person bringing glory to HIs name.

The seven smitten days of Miriam

24 Mar

The LORD replied to Moses, “If her father had spit in her face, would she not have been in disgrace for seven days? Confine her outside the camp for seven days; after that she can be brought back.” So Miriam was confined outside the camp for seven days, and the people did not move on till she was brought back.”Numbers 12:14-15.

I have been studying about Miriam lately and thereby came across Numbers 12 where Aaron and Miriam speak against  Moses. As I was reading this portion,Holy spirit guided me into few thoughts about  the way God dealt with them and corrected them.Miriam is an old testament prophetess and she has a special place in the Jewish history. In the Bible she is introduced as the elder sister of Moses, the little girl who was hiding behind the bushes at  a distance, watching her little brother Moses who was put on a basket and kept between the reeds of River Nile(Exodus 2). In Exodus 15,Miriam is described as a prophetess and choir leader who sang and led the women in worship after they crossed the Red Sea.God’s call for Miriam was to assist her brothers Moses and Aaron when the people of Israel were bought from Egypt, the land of slavery to their promised land. Micah 6:7 “I brought you up out of Egypt and redeemed you from the land of slavery. I sent Moses to lead you, also Aaron and Miriam.”She is a bold and influential person, with the gift of prophecy and great leadership quality. She is a pioneer worshipper which makes her special and shows her thankful heart before God.

After reading the dignified character of Miriam, we may become confused about the opening verse.Well,I will outline the story for your understanding.Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman he married. They talked to Moses in a spirit that was not righteous before God,“Has the LORD spoken only through Moses?” they asked. “Hasn’t he also spoken through us?” And the LORD heard this. Here beyond the less weighing personal issue, they are gravitating their talk into spiritual matters, talking proudly against Moses and judging Him. They compared their spiritual gifts with that of Moses and they forgot the spiritual and leadership order God have set for each of them.God heard what they said and He bought the three of them out of the camp and spoke to them. Here God is making it clear to Aaron and Miriam that,Moses is the one who saw the similitude of God,He is the one who have spend days and nights together with God and God’s eyes have found him the most meek and faithful person in all of the house of Israel. God asked them “Were you not afraid to talk against my servant?”God was angry against them and He departed. Then Moses and Aaron found Miriam afflicted by leprosy ,seeing this Moses prayed for her healing and, Aaron prayed and repented.God answered the prayer of Moses and said its God’s punishment that caused this disgrace to her;so for her to be cured she had to be kept in isolation for seven days outside the camp and then could be bought back. The people did not move from there till she was bought back.

When we try to understand the above portion we can see Miriam trying to portray or prove her capability and self righteousness in front of Moses and God.While defiling the marriage allegation of Moses,Miriam is claiming her purity before God,whereby she is chosen as a prophetess to the people of Israel.God spoke to Miriam as she was righteous, but when our own righteousness becomes the yardstick to point others it becomes a sin(no man is righteous before God).God cannot stand the spirit of pride,he is searching for people with  gentle and humble spirit. He does not approve his children to have filthy talks or hurting words.I was happy and much inclined to the thought that, God did not allow His servant Moses to go around with a hurtful spirit and, also did not leave Aaron and Miriam with their unclean spirit. His conversation brought them all together and bound them again together by the spirit of love and repentance to one another which was essential to fulfill their appointed mission. When God ordered the isolation period of seven days for Miriam, the journey of the people of Israel was hindered for seven days.Even though there was delay for his people to move on,God wanted correction, right spirit and right doctrine to dwell among His people ,especially the leaders whom they depend on.

The seven days when Miriam was out of the camp, isolated;might have been the days where she realized and repented about her sin.The purity that she claimed for was punished with leprosy ,which is considered impure. All the support and attention she had was cut off,she had a quiet time to analyze and renew a right spirit before God.Everything that Miriam was proud about herself was removed from her life for those seven days. The smitten seven days also made her understand God’s righteousness in her life. After the seven days of disgrace, God and the people of Israel accepted her back.

Dear child of God,

1)Are we having the right spirit, God desires in us?

2)Is there a factor of pride driving any of the talents or spiritual blessings God ordained upon us?

3)When God demands correction in our life are we prompt to respond and be submissive to the thoughts Holy Spirit puts in us?

4)Working with the right spirit(meek, faithful)will make us a blessing to many. God is searching for a submissive spirit in each one of us,so that he can entitle us with many spiritual blessings and fuel us with heavenly talents.

May God bless you,

In Christ Jesus

The first note of true love

3 Mar

Lord, Your cross is where,

I heard the first note of true love.

At the cross of Calvary,

where you bore my sin and grieve

and purchased me: the slave of sin.

The lamb of God, slain for my sin

Became a sin offering to pour His life-

abundantly onto me.

Oh!This love overflows my heart

or I never can contain the depth:

Where you the Son of God,

In all your Majesty

ever thought to save me,

just a bit of dust on the face of earth…

In all your love and power-

you found me precious and redeemable

and brought your magnificent plans

come together in my life

and gave me this precious gift of salvation,

altogether free.

I was so much in need of you – Lord,

bonded, rejected,withdrawn…

crushed in my pew of darkness

far from your grace and mercy

I am glad you saw me there ,

in the darkest hour of my life

with your eyes full of compassion.

and held me so close to your heart,

engraved me on the palm of your hands;

like no one ever had,JESUS…

Your love have set me free:

When your note of love reached my ears,

they got open

the living water rushed to my soul.

As I saw your crucified image

my vision changed for ever.

I can perceive your love

now all through this nature.

Your love clothed me in honor and

your words added wisdom.

If ever I declined  in my love for you

restitute my soul

to the first note of your love.

A Wedding Invitation.

21 Jan

And Jesus answered and spoke to them again by parables and said: 2 “The kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who arranged a marriage for his son, 3 and sent out his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding; and they were not willing to come. 14For many are called, but few are chosen.” Mathew 22:1-14

[Wish you all a blessed new year! ]The parable of the wedding feast is a very common scripture but, I am repeatedly inspired to bring out few things from this portion. If we read Mathew-22:1-14 we will get the idea of the story wherein; a King is arranging a big wedding banquet for his prince .He has already send the invitation to many honored people with the anticipation they will be there to give honor to his son. As there was no response he sends out his servants for a second time to remind them about the feast, but they all simply ignored the invitation for silly day to day matters and were not ready to attend the wedding feast. Again the King sends a second group of servants to all the specially invited guests to let them know every preparation is done for the wedding and invited them again, but they took it lightly .They neither paid attention nor set their time apart for the wedding feast. They dishonored the King as well as the Prince. Hearing this the King gets angry and He destroys them and their cities. Now the King tells his servants; those who were invited were unworthy so, go into the highways and find as many as they could gather, both good and bad as the feast is all ready. The servants did as the King said and the wedding hall was full. The King came in to see the guests and saw one person without His wedding garment and the King became angry and He was punished for ignoring to give honor to the King.

Jesus mentions in the beginning that this parable resembles the Kingdom of God. Here God Almighty is the King, Jesus is the son of this honored King and the wedding banquet symbolizes the entry to the kingdom of God. In this parable we can see two groups of people, who are invited for this wedding banquet. The first group is a highly qualified group of guests; they all are highly entitled to be the guests of this honored and mighty king. They all have a special place in the invited list. This symbolizes the people of Israel-the apple of God’s eye. But when Jesus came into this world to save them, they could not recognize His call or accept Him as Messiah, they simply did not believe in Him. When the highly favored nation of Israel, failed to receive the saving grace of Jesus Christ, the invitation was extended through grace to the second group. Here the invitation is open to anyone who hears the gospel of Jesus, anyone who believes in Jesus and accepts Him as one’s own Savior and chooses to obey Him is gathered to attend the big banquet, the Kingdom of God. It is by grace that the second selection is made, there was nothing to make you and me, pre-qualify for this selection. When the grace of God shined over the outcast, a Savior was born to the whole world. Here God have not kept any set boundaries to limit anyone to come into the Kingdom Of God. In the parable Jesus says both good and bad were invited, not our righteousness, good deeds, education, family, values, wealth, wisdom none of them makes us eligible to enter the kingdom of God. It is purely the grace of God, 1 Corinthians 1:27“But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.” Today if you feel the need of a Savior, a need to be out from your bondage, the need to be redeemed from sin, you simply have to accept his invitation-Jesus came in search of all the outcast and unprivileged to make them righteous not by law but by faith.

In this parable verse 11, speaks about a wedding garment. When the King comes in to see His guests, He saw a man without his wedding garment, and the King asks him, Friend, where is your wedding garment? And he became speechless out of shame and guilt. The above parable talks to us about the wedding invitation which is the call, our readiness to respond being the selection and now comes the need of the wedding garment. What is this garment? Revelation 19:7, 8 “Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honor to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.” The wedding garment is the righteousness that we need to wear within our heart. Righteousness is an attribute of the holiness of God. Being in the selected list of the Kings wedding Banquet does not make you and me exempted from judgment, here comes the need of righteousness as our garment. Jesus says “For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven.” Mathew 5:20. If so we need to stop pointing out on the righteousness of others and should deal with ourselves; are we assuming spiritual hypocrisy? How far are we righteous in spiritual matters? Righteousness according to the eyes of God is our holiness, our resemblance to the character of Christ, our obedience to the word of God, our submissiveness to the Holy Spirit. Today you and me are invited to attend the wedding feast with the King, are you ready to accept Him and honor Him as your King and Savior? If you have accepted the invitation please make sure you have the wedding garment, for many are selected but few are chosen. May God bless you abundantly.

Abraham-From promise to an oath.

18 Dec

Hebrews 6:13-15

“When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one
greater
for him to swear by, he swore by himself, saying, “I will
surely bless you and
give you many descendants.” And so after
waiting patiently, Abraham received
what was promised.”

In Hebrews chapter 6, Apostle Paul is emphasizing the need to persist in faith
and hope to reach the inheritance God has in store for his children who
obey him.In the above verse we see Abraham, the father of faith as a vivid
example so that we are encouraged not to limit the certainty of Gods promises.
A promise is a word of assurance or a guarantee that someone will do a certain
thing in future: it is a reason to hope for. I personally cherish the promises God
gave me and I believe all of us will be happy to acknowledge the fact that the
Almighty God has time and patience to talk to us personally and has some
blessings kept aside for each of us. I was so inclined to the above verse where
God is swearing on himself to double confirm a promise given to Abraham.
Let’s go to the book of Genesis where God is giving promises to Abraham and
see how the above promise where he swears on God himself is so distinct
from the rest of the promises given to Abraham.

In Genesis 12:1-3 we see God’s call on Abraham’s life where he was asked to
leave his homeland, relatives and fathers home to a land God is yet to show.
The first set of promises were given at that time and those blessings were
manifold (Personal,to all his generations, all nations). From this point
Abraham trusts the promises of God and he is moving according to the
desire of God. The second promise is given after Abraham separates from
Lot and lives in the land of Canaan (regarding the inheritance of land,
generations) Genesis13:14-17.The third promise is given after Abraham
rescues Lot from the King of Sodom and here God talks to Abraham about
his concerns and we see Abraham is doubting whetherhis own son will be
his heir? And God shows him the stars in the sky and reconfirmsthe
promise and that is where it is recorded Abraham believed in God
(Genesis 15:1-6).We also need this kind of reconfirmations from God at
times to reconcile to the promises of God. The fourth time God gives his
promise to Abraham and Sarah together, but this is after an interval of
more than ten years, and in the course of time Abraham became the father
of Ishmael through Sarah’s maidservant Hagar. But God strengthens them
again in due season, God talks to Abraham specifically, your own wife Sarah
is going to give birth to a son, he should be called Isaac andthere is going
to be an everlasting covenant with his descendants. (Genesis 17:1-8).
The fifth promise was given at the oaks of Mamre where the three visitors
specify the time of fulfillment of the promise (Genesis18:1-15). The sixth
promise to Abraham is given after the birth of Isaac right after the test of
Abraham’s faih Genesis 22:17, 18.

The test of Abraham’s faith was not an easy one. God is asking for something
really precious in the life of Abraham. Isaac was not just an answer to Abraham’s
prayer; but was the result of God’s promise, result of almost twenty-five years of
wait, and the descendant on whom God has set all the promises given to
Abraham, a person who should be a channel of blessing to many nations. God
is asking Abraham a sacrifice of his hope. A covenant blessing was also laid
between God and Abraham that is an everlasting covenant and Abraham had
total trust in the nature of His God, that he will never break His covenant.
Abraham did not argue with God for a compromise but trusted His God and
obeyed him. God was pleased by Abraham’s act of obedience and moved the
promise he had for Abraham to a next level an oath. While overcoming a
test of faith our promises would be turned into oaths
,they would
be of extreme importance in the sight of God because the security of our
faith matters to our Father. Here God had sworn on Himself so that his
words for Abraham were final and whatever maybe the circumstances God did
not want to rethink about the manifold blessings he gave to Abraham. The oath
confirmed the covenant or the promise given so that we, the heirs of this
blessing from Abraham should recognize the unchangeable nature of God’s
counsel.

How much value have you given to the promises of God? Bible says because
of two things there is reason for us to trust in God’s promises; it is impossible for
God to lie and also because we should have a strong hope to rely upon; His
promises will come to pass. If you are having an unfulfilled promise from God
in your life, trust in God as it is certain that he is faithful to make you see your
promises come alive with your own eyes .All you need is to have the patience
to wait because while you are in the valley there is a molding going on so that
you can stand strong in the mountain top to proclaim God’s love and mercy.
I believe a valid reason prevails for every second your blessing is delayed and
it shows the concern, love and perfect will of our father in your life. Like
Abraham let’s be able to endure the test of obedience in Christ so that our
promises shall find a deeper meaning in the sight of God.

In Christ Jesus,
Smitha Thomas.
